Algeria

A hydrocarbon heavyweight with tight-control energy policy. Brownfield thesis is strong; entry requires patience and a local partner.

The country today

Algeria spans 2.38 million square kilometers. It is a nation of 45 million people with a hydrocarbon-dependent economy roughly $233 billion in GDP. Oil reserves stand at 12.2 billion barrels; gas reserves at 2.4 trillion cubic feet. Sonatrach is the state NOC — vertically integrated and gatekeeping all upstream acreage.

Energy — oil and gas

Algeria's proven oil reserves are roughly 13.2 billion barrels. Current production is approximately 1.0 million barrels a day of oil and 8.8 bcf a day of gas, both declining. Hassi Messaoud and Hassi R'Mel are the flagship fields. Sonatrach outlined a 2025–2030 plan to drill nearly 1,450 oil wells. Eni operates In Amenas and In Salah alongside Sonatrach and Equinor. Equinor has a 27-year continuous presence.

The blue economy

Algeria has a 1,600 km Mediterranean coastline. Aquaculture is nascent — almost 1,000 tonnes of freshwater production. The government targets 50,000 tonnes by 2030 under the National Blue Economy Strategy. Blue economy is a C-tier play, 18 months out or later.

The Norwegian corridor

Equinor is the primary Norwegian energy player, operating In Salah and In Amenas alongside Eni and Sonatrach. Entry via Equinor is slow — consensus-based decisions among three partners take time.

What Saga sees

Hassi Messaoud and Hassi R'Mel are classic tight-carbonate, high-water-cut, mature-field exemplars. The realistic 12-month play is a consultancy engagement on brownfield-optimisation strategy. A second path is partnership with an established in-country service provider.

How we work

Saga carries relationships into Algeria's upstream landscape and understands Sonatrach's structure, its technical committees, and the tempo of decision-making. We provide market entry, commercial representation, due diligence, and ministry liaison.
