Kenya

East Africa's digital leader and regional aquaculture powerhouse. Kenya's real opportunity for Saga is fisheries, port automation, and AI-driven systems.

The country today

Kenya's 55 million people generate $220 billion nominal GDP. President William Ruto is reshaping energy policy toward local private operators. Kenya published its National AI Strategy 2025–2030 in March 2025. Konza Technopolis is the flagship tech park.

Energy — oil and gas

The Turkana Basin holds roughly 560 million barrels of light crude. Gulf Energy acquired Tullow's portfolio in September 2025 for $120 million and targets first oil in December 2026 at 20,000 bpd. The crude is onshore, low-pressure, with high water cut. Well design emphasis is sand control rather than stimulation.

The blue economy

Kenya's inland aquaculture is among Africa's most productive — 50,000–60,000 tonnes per year. Marine fisheries produce 150,000–200,000 tonnes annually. Mombasa is East Africa's largest port at 25 million tonnes per year. The Kenya Maritime Authority is testing AI-driven vessel monitoring.

The Norwegian corridor

Norway's embassy in Nairobi opened in 1964. Fish for Development is active at NOK 50–80 million annually. Equinor has no current operations. Kenya has direct partnerships with Norwegian tech firms on digital transformation through Konza Technopolis.

What Saga sees

Turkana is not a traditional completion technology play — the reservoir is unconsolidated sand. But adjacent plays are strong: fisheries surveillance (0–12 months), aquaculture hatchery automation (12–24 months), port automation at Mombasa (24+ months). Kenya is where Saga pivots from pure hydrocarbon work to digital transformation.

How we work

Saga is in Kenya 2–3 times per year with relationships at Strathmore University, the Ministry of Energy, and Norad's Fish for Development coordination. We connect Norwegian principals to Konza Technopolis tech partners.
