Mozambique

Gateway to East African gas production, anchored by Mozambique LNG's restart and a thriving fisheries corridor.

The country today

Mozambique's 34 million people span a coastline shaped by energy, fisheries, and regional trade. GDP stands at $38 billion. President Daniel Chapo restarted the Mozambique LNG project in January 2026 — a $20 billion project. Mozambique sits on 100 trillion cubic feet of proved reserves across Areas 1, 3, and 4.

Energy — oil and gas

Coral South has been producing LNG since 2022 at 3.4 Mt/yr. TotalEnergies announced full restart of Mozambique LNG in January 2026 — the Golfinho-Atum field is designed for 12.88 Mt/yr with first gas forecast H1 2029. Coral North FLNG is past FID with deviated appraisal wells planned for 2026–2027.

The blue economy

Mozambique is Africa's second-largest shrimp exporter. Annual marine catch is about 120,000 tonnes. IUU fishing is significant. Chicoa Fish Farm on Lake Cahora Bassa runs 36 production cages delivering 1,200–1,400 tonnes per year. Beira, Maputo, and Nacala are the port terminals.

The Norwegian corridor

Norway's embassy in Maputo has operated since 1976. Fish for Development is active, funding artisanal fisheries governance and aquaculture pilots. Equinor held exploration acreage but exited. The warm-intro path runs through TotalEnergies' upstream technical committee and ENH leadership.

What Saga sees

The 12-month story is Coral North appraisal drilling in 2026–27. ExxonMobil and Eni will drill 5–8 deviated wells. If tight-gas pay is confirmed, advanced stimulation and perforation design become real procurement decisions. Fisheries surveillance can move in 6–9 months if Norad co-funding aligns.

How we work

Saga visits 2–3 times per year with standing relationships at the TotalEnergies Afungi operations office and through Norad's Fish for Development coordination.
