Nigeria

Sub-Saharan Africa's largest economy and largest oil producer. Mature Niger Delta brownfields with tight-pay carbonates and declining production.

The country today

Nigeria has 230 million people and a GDP exceeding $480 billion. The country remains Africa's leading oil producer with 37 billion barrels of proven reserves and 215 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Recent divestments have accelerated indigenization: ExxonMobil sold to Seplat, Eni transferred to Oando, Shell is divesting SPDC.

Energy — oil and gas

Crude oil production remains constrained at the 2026 target of 1.8 million bpd. The Petroleum Industry Act (2021) restructured upstream governance, creating NNPCL as a profit-driven commercial entity. Indigenous operators — Seplat, Aiteo, Heritage, Oando — now hold material acreage and are actively seeking foreign completion technology.

The blue economy

Nigeria's maritime fisheries are vast but fragmented. Total annual catch is estimated at 2.5–3.0 million tonnes. Nigeria is the world's largest producer of African catfish. Blue economy is secondary for Saga; the primary play remains oil and gas.

The Norwegian corridor

Norway maintains an embassy in Abuja and a mission in Lagos. Equinor exited in December 2024, but the legacy Equinor/Statoil network within NNPC technical staff is real. Warm introduction paths run through industry alumni networks.

What Saga sees

The Niger Delta's brownfield portfolio faces natural aquifer influx and pressure depletion driving water-cut acceleration. Indigenous operators managing these assets have capital discipline and are ready to adopt proven foreign completion technology. The entry window is 2026–2027.

How we work

Saga visits Nigeria regularly, maintains relationships with NNPC technical staff, and is embedded in the warm-introduction ecosystem. We provide market entry strategy, technical due diligence, commercial representation, and deal structuring.
