Tanzania
The East African story that Norway built. Equinor has been here 19 years. The appraisal wells starting now will define the next decade.
The country today
Tanzania's 63 million people are anchored to a $150 billion nominal GDP. President Samia Suluhu Hassan is pushing for Tanzania LNG FID by June 2026. Equinor leads the consortium at 35% with Shell at 25% and ExxonMobil at 20%. Equinor has been Block 2 operator since 2007 across 57 Tcf of proved reserves.
Energy — oil and gas
Tanzania LNG is a $42 billion project — FID targeted H1 2026, first gas H2 2034. Two LNG trains with 10–12 Mt/yr capacity. Appraisal wells are being drilled now — high water cut, heterogeneous pay, low pressure. This is where advanced completion technology fits.
The blue economy
Lake Victoria yields roughly 350,000 tonnes per year. The Mafia Channel artisanal fishery is high-value for prawns and grouper. Aquaculture targets 50,000 tonnes/yr by 2030. Dar es Salaam is East Africa's largest container hub at 5.5 million TEU/yr.
The Norwegian corridor
Norway's embassy in Dar es Salaam opened in 1961. Equinor's Block 2 operations and Tanzania LNG consortium role make Norway the energy partner. Fish for Development is active and substantial at NOK 100–150 million annually.
What Saga sees
Saga's single highest-probability East African engagement. Tanzania LNG appraisal wells in thin, high-water-cut pay present a textbook tight-gas opportunity. FID is expected H1 2026, meaning appraisal drilling is greenlit within 6–12 months. Equinor is the operator-lead with 19 years of history.
How we work
Saga is in Tanzania 3–4 times per year with standing technical relationships at Equinor's Dar es Salaam office, TPDC's upstream team, and Norad's Fish for Development coordination.
