Invictus Energy has relocated Exalo Rig 202 to the Musuma-1 exploration wellsite within its Cabora Bassa Project in Zimbabwe, where the company holds an 80% operated interest. The rig move follows the completion of wellpad construction, civil works, and access road upgrades at the site. Exalo will now proceed with rigging up the unit ahead of drilling operations at Musuma-1.
The rig was previously deployed at the Mukuyu-2 wellsite, also within the Cabora Bassa Project, before being transferred to Musuma-1. The sequential drilling campaign signals that Invictus is advancing a multi-well exploration programme across the project, using the same contracted rig to move between targets. The completion of surface infrastructure — including road upgrades capable of supporting rig transport — points to a methodical, logistics-intensive operation in a landlocked and infrastructure-constrained environment.
Zimbabwe's Cabora Bassa basin remains one of southern Africa's less-explored frontier hydrocarbon provinces, and Invictus's ongoing campaign represents the most active drilling effort in the country in recent years. For service companies, the programme's structure — a single rig cycling between exploration wells with full civil and site-prep works between each move — underscores the project's dependence on local and regional logistics, drilling fluids, wellsite services, and technical support. The Musuma-1 well adds to the data set that Invictus is building toward any eventual resource assessment or commercialisation decision, though the project remains firmly in the exploration phase with no final investment decision in sight.
The Cabora Bassa Project's remote, landlocked setting presents distinctive operational challenges that differ from the offshore-dominated opportunities Norwegian service companies typically target on the continent. Nonetheless, the active drilling programme creates near-term demand for specialist well services, drilling consumables, and technical personnel, with Exalo — a Polish drilling contractor — serving as the primary rig operator on-site.
