MODEC has announced it will supply a SOFEC internal turret mooring system for the Coral Norte floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project, located offshore Mozambique. The contract reinforces Mozambique's position as one of Sub-Saharan Africa's most significant LNG development frontiers, with Coral Norte representing a further step in the country's offshore gas monetisation programme.
The SOFEC internal turret mooring system is a critical component of any FLNG vessel, enabling the unit to weathervane around a fixed mooring point while maintaining continuous offloading and production operations in open-water conditions. MODEC's selection as supplier for this system signals active progression of the Coral Norte project toward hardware procurement and, eventually, fabrication and deployment phases.
Mozambique's offshore LNG sector has drawn sustained international interest given the scale of discovered gas resources in the Rovuma Basin. Coral Norte follows the precedent set by the Coral Sul FLNG, which achieved first LNG production and established the operational template for floating liquefaction in these waters. A second FLNG unit in the same general region indicates that development momentum is continuing despite the broader project financing and security challenges that have affected some of the country's onshore LNG schemes.
For the wider supply chain, a mooring system contract award of this nature is typically an early long-lead procurement decision, suggesting that the Coral Norte project schedule is advancing with sufficient confidence to commit to specialised equipment orders. Further procurement rounds covering topsides, hull construction, marine systems, and subsea tie-back infrastructure can be expected to follow as the project matures toward a final investment decision or post-FID execution phase.
