Vaalco Ebouri-5H well tops 8,000 bopd offshore Gabon

Score: 66 · 2026-06-17

Vaalco Energy has resumed production from the Ebouri-5H well offshore Gabon at an initial gross flow rate of more than 8,000 barrels of crude oil per day, with approximately 4,700 net barrels per day attributable to the US operator. The well was drilled and completed in the Ebouri field and is positioned at the top of the deposit's geological structure, featuring a 300-metre lateral section in the Gamba sands.

The Ebouri field is an established offshore Gabon asset for Vaalco, and the Ebouri-5H result represents a meaningful production addition for the company's Gabon portfolio. The lateral design targeting the Gamba sands — a well-known productive reservoir in the region — indicates a deliberate infill or step-out drilling strategy aimed at maximising recovery from the existing field structure rather than opening a new discovery. At 8,000 gross bopd initial rate, the well is a material contributor by the standards of Gabon's mid-tier offshore production base.

Gabon's offshore sector has seen sustained activity from independent operators seeking to extend field life and optimise recovery from mature assets. Vaalco's approach at Ebouri — drilling a horizontal well with a targeted lateral into proven sands — is consistent with the kind of reservoir management programmes that typically require well services, completions expertise, and light intervention infrastructure rather than large-scale greenfield development. The 300-metre lateral in the Gamba sands also points to a relatively compact wellbore design, suggesting the work was executed within the constraints of an existing offshore development framework.

No contract awards, FPSO modifications, or third-party service agreements have been announced in connection with the Ebouri-5H programme at this stage. The production announcement reflects an operational milestone rather than a new commercial procurement cycle. Norwegian service companies should monitor Vaalco's Gabon drilling schedule for indications of further infill wells or workover campaigns, which would generate more direct procurement opportunities in well services, completion fluids, and subsea light well intervention.

Why this matters to partners and clients of Saga

This is a production resumption milestone rather than a contract award or tender, so direct procurement outreach is premature. Norwegian well services and completion specialists — particularly those with horizontal drilling and sand-face completion experience — should monitor Vaalco's Gabon drilling programme for follow-on infill wells or workover campaigns that would require third-party services. Relationship-building with Vaalco's Gabon operations team and regional drilling contractors is the recommended next step.
